Description: The mission of the University of California Berkeley Housing and Dining Sustainability (H&DS) team is to use student-led advocacy, auditing, and peer education to make sustainability accessible and appealing to the UC Berkeley community, improve housing & dining infrastructure, and work towards more ethical and environmentally sound practices. 

Garden Description: Garden Coordinators provide educational programming, maintain the Clark Kerr Garden and Brown’s Cafe. This position includes coordination with various staff and environmental organizations, coordinating and managing internship activities, leading educational programming in or related to the garden, contributing to food literacy and food security for students and the surrounding campus community, as well as crop planting and harvesting. Garden Coordinators work in collaboration with the larger Housing & Dining Sustainability team, including coordinators that manage other on campus gardens, as well as the various teams included under the H&DS umbrella. 

Weekly:

  • Meet with the Sustainability Coordinator and other H&DS Sustainability Team members

  • Office hours: Planning/Coordinating/Responding to Emails; Creating crop plans, Research about Gardening skills/plants; Curate event posters; Culminate spreadsheets for seed starting; Developing educational programming

  • Garden Hours: Plant vegetables, flowers, trees, and seeds; Harvest fruits/vegetables for the Anchor House residents and related programming; Maintain garden beds by watering, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, and more. 

  • Assist with other sustainability projects run by H&DS team members

  • Host weekly work hours and monthly workshops

  • Hours per week: 8-12

Monthly:

  • Recruit volunteers from the greater campus to work in the garden during hosted open hours and assist with educational programming

  • Facilitate sustainability education events

  • Communicate with assigned staff and interns

Qualifications:

  • Student at the University of California, Berkeley; preference for student who can stay in the position for 1+ year (including summer break) 

  • Experience or background in garden education and food production

  • Interest in researching and communicating aspects of plant and food sustainability

  • Good teamwork skills; comfortable being self-directed on projects

  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse parties; comfortable with public speaking

  • Ability to communicate over email in a timely manner 

PAID POSITION

Hours: Part-time, 10-12 hrs/wk

Pay rate: $18.67/hr
